Island Katheeb "Sexually Assaulted Three Young Boys"

By Susannah Peter in Male'December 31, 2007

An Island Katheeb (Chief) has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting two young boys, the Assistant Atoll Chief told Minivan News today. Police would not name the suspect but confirmed they have arrested a man from the same island for suspected sex offences against children.

Igbal Mohamed, Katheeb of Shaviyani Atoll Maroshi, groomed three nine-year old boys with cigarettes before sexually assaulting them, a cousin of one of the alleged victims, who asked not to be named, told Minivan News today. The cousin said only two of the boys' families wished to press charges.

Police arrested Igbal, who has been Katheeb for five years, on Saturday night for the alleged assault, according to Assistant Atoll Chief Abdullah Ibrahim, who was drafted in as acting Katheeb yesterday morning.

The parents of two of the boys, all from Maroshi, reported it to Police after their sons told them what had happened, said the cousin.

"I feel really angry about this," he said. "The whole family wants justice to be done."

Police Media Coordinator Sergeant Shiyam today confirmed they had arrested a 36 year old man from Maroshi, suspected of sexually assaulting two boys, on Saturday night.

Police policy on naming suspects appears inconsistent. Shiyam, who refused to name the suspect, said it is "sometimes" normal practice to "withhold such information in sexual offence cases."The "nature of the evidence" dictates whether they do so, he added, although he denied the status or identity of the suspect in this case had any bearing on the decision. He could not say where police are holding the suspect, who he said "has not admitted to the allegations."
